If we someday enjoy better riding and handling Saabs it will be a
direct result of less-than-flattering press reviews of our current
car. I agree that German machinery often gets rave ink from magaz-
ines, but who's to say it ain't true? Myself, I do not want a BMW
either- they lack the utility of my Swedish meatball and I'd lose a fabulous dealer (more like family!) relationship. I tried an M3
back in '96 and an A4 Quattro 2.8 a couple years later and without
hesitation state they're light years ahead chassis-wise. The BMW's
a better riding car even given its performance-tuned suspension! A
sophisticated design can get both. Hey, Saab's in my blood- 200+K
in an '85 Turbo 16v and near 50K on my '98 900S Turbo. I wanna see
this brand survive! Look at the motorcycle world: many consider a
Ducati 996 the epitome of design and technology, but would that be
in existence if competition hadn't forced a small manufacturer to
raise their game or die? They succeeded, and fabulously so, but it
wasn't before facing extinction. As much as those guys hate Japan-
ese machinery they gotta be grateful for the big shove forward. If
Saab steps up we can be glad for Munich's fine efforts of today...
and a company that accepted the criticisms and responded. Hopeful-
ly that negative Car & Driver article is posted in engineering and
boardrooms right now. Or, they can pretend it's all prejudice and
nothing needs be done...
