"I just hope we don't rebadge oldsmobile & pontiac platforms as SAABs. "
I agree completely, and it would be contrary to the point of GM buying Saab. Saab is meant to represent an upscale Euro entrance for GM into the marketplace. My guess is that they'll innovate by taking the best of Saab (the engines IMHO) and the best from GM (dunno, stumpted there. suppose you can't just transplant a corvette). Problem is, neither of these variables bring into the mix what others (read Germans) have learned about handling or 4WD technology.
Having said that, it's important to note that Audi's recent success rests primarily on the popularity of 4WD (in combination with new found personal income), not because they make such great cars. Same with Subaru. What can Saab pin its hat on? I look favorably on Saab's decision to hire the Michael Mauer, former Mercedes designer. Maybe we'll see some great designs down the road that will continue to set Saab apart. Now we need an injection of technology . . . let's wait and see what they've done with the NG 9-3.
