Why is torque limited in 1st and 2nd?

I am about to hit 40000 miles and when the warranty goes, the Abbott chip goes in. I know that the torque is limited on the stock 5 speed in 1st and 2nd, but is it to just reduce wheelspin or does it protect the driveline as well? I know there are some high mile 900's out there with Abbott chips, but will there be any increased danger to the Transmission, Clutch, Etc in the 9-3's?
Any help would be appreciated
