I picked up my 9-3 Friday evening and it looks like they did a good job. They had disassembled everything, cleaned out the "bad" grease and re-lubed everthing with the correct grease (see the link in the post above this one for Edward's more detailed description).
The temperature knob turns very smoothly (better than it did when it was new). The air flow knob turns freely and you have much more of a feel of the cable actually turning the air flow drum (you can feel just a little bit of play in the cable).
Even though they had take apart much of the dashboard, you can't tell and everything seems to be tightened nice and snug (i.e., no rattles).
All in all, I am pleased (not with the original problem, but with the work done to fix it under warranty).
Mark
