I agree that twice a year would be a good way to go. The Purolator Pure One filter is also a very good filter, that does not cost as much as the Mobil One filter. I now use this filter with the Mobil One 10w30.
Many of outlets that sell oil also offer free recycling of the oil. I drain the filters and put them out in the trash. I expect that filters at service stations go straight to the dump. I know that that is not optimal. But then there are all of the 1 quart bottles. They contain some oil and they go to the dump as is too.
I like to change my own oil, and keep an eye on the underside of things myself.
