I have been in Kansas since 1997. I drive through Flint and Port Huron 2 or three times a year. It has not been too cold here yet. But I would not call it comfortable. November was cold here. Last November we had lots of days in the 70's and 80's. But El'Nino is over.
I elongated the tower slots on a 1978 Volvo 264 once. Went to the dealers and burned them with a torch in my three piece suit, remember what those were! The dealer was impressed. Then I showed them how to equalize the idle air across the two throttle plates and intake systems. I removed the hoses from the two PVC bleed orifices and hooked up some vinyl tube with some water in it, to make a differential manometer. They never again used the Saab specified exhaust gas analyser hooked up to the two exhaust manifold sampling ports to do this. Also showed them that cleaning the throttle ports negated any need to make any such adjustments in the first place. But now we have idle control valves, and idle does not creep unless the valve goes bad or the throttle is very dirty.
In London we built the 33-15 and 33-17 170 ton diesel electric haulers, locomotives and armoured vehicles. We build the LAV's for the USMC. I provided unix and product support for FEA, CAD/CAM, Unigraphics etc. I have two degrees in Mech Eng, mostly with a focus on fluids, heat transfer and turbo machinery. (I am not missing the general or EDS) :) Did vendor quality assurance which was a good exposure to all of the vendors' technologies and processes. A much broader, and more interesting scope than an in-house only experience.
Some things were rather big. Brake drums and struts that weighed as much as a car!
