Part of the reasoning would be that driving the car warms all systems on the car, not just the engine, but gearbox, bearings, brakes, etc. Idling in the driveway would just warm the engine.
An argument could be made that since the engine internals are lightly loaded at idle/high idle, different wear patterns would develop compared to those on an engine that was under load at these same (roughly) rpms. This would be a very weak argument, though.
The only reason I could think of to let the car sit and warm up at idle would be so that it's warm when you get in. Sitting in the car keeping it at a higher idle would kind of defeat that purpose. If I'm sitting in the car, I might as well be driving it. Besides, our heated seats keep us warm until the car warms up anyway, right? At least they do when they work. :(
