in this example, as this person just admitted that the problem worsens as he/she turns on more accessories inside the vehicle as it is warming up. It is clearly an alternator laboring under load. The IAC is in total control of the idle speed at this point. If the throttle body/throttle plate is dirty, then cleaning it will indeed help.
Changing to a lighter viscosity will help in reaching warm-up point faster, and allow less drain on the battery as the temps plunge.
If you guys are ALREADY USING synthetic oil--say 10W 30 Mobil ONE for example, you will gain very very little benefit to go to 5W-30---unless you now live in consistent temps of -20 F/28C approx.
There is a benefit to those of you who are using mineral base oils to go lighter and/or to synthetics in this cold weather.
For the rest of us who are in the 10F/20F in the day and 0 to 10 at night, and are already using Mobil 1 10w -30 there is so negligible a benefit to be gained here--except the 20 bucks or so lost to do it.
Mobil 1 10W-30 flows at 50 BELOW zero---FYI. 5W-30 flow at -55.
So ask yourself if you REALLY plan to be outside driving your SAAB if the temps get to -55.
I think you'll have other more dramatic issues on hand at that point.(-55)
