The cams are chain-driven off the crankshaft. A gear on the end of each cam engages that chain. If he's right, then I hope they don't just slap a new gear on the end and call it good. There will most likely be little metal pieces all through the engine. At the very least, it might be a good thing to have an oil analysis done after the repair is complete. That'll tell you if there are metal flakes circulating through the engine. If your dealer won't pay for it, they you should.
