There's a bit more to it. If the dealer (or manufacturer) insists that you can/will void your warranty unless you use a specific product, then they must provide that product free of charge--that's a federal law.
However, if they say you must use synthetic oil or you may/will void your warranty, that is acceptable, since you can use any product which meets/exceeds the specified requirements.
If you don't use a synthetic, and you have an engine problem which can be attributed to the use of the wrong oil (pretty hard to do, but possible), then you may have a problem. On the other hand, if the brakes malfunction, it is obviously unrelated and they must fix the problem.
