Well, I'll say Chris K. has a good point there that 9-3 with 185 hp is about as good as it gets.
It don't have that really big kick in the back turbo boost, but it goes well at any RPM and is nice to drive even full throttle.
The main limitation of the 9-3 (when it comes to tuning) is that it don't have four wheel drive (or rear wheel drive maybe). Trying to feed more than 200 hp or so through the front wheels aren't the ideal solution. The engine however can take about as much as you want seeing Per Eklund's rallycross car with about 700hp in full trim. But he has converted the car to four wheel drive.... obviously.
On the other hand, If I had a 9-3 I would tune it to at least 250hp, but that'd be for a big trade off in other departments. It would be fast, but it would also become somthing of a handful to handle.
