The bearing are lubricated with oil, and the oil keeps the metal parts from touching as long as things are turning. Higher speeds creates greater pressures in the oil film that keep the metal pieces from touching each other. This motion of the the metal parts relative to each other, creates a shear flow in the oil. It is the shear that creates the fluid support in the bearing. Like hydroplaining tires on a wet street. If the speeds are low, then hydroplaining is less likely.
Gasoline engines will feel very rough if you try to develop a load at low RPM's. The enigine's torque output is very much not smooth. This causes large excursions in the engine mounts and things move around and create noise and vibration.
So you can accelerate from 1500 rpm's with gentle acceleration, but if you open the throttle, it will not sound or feel great, and you are not getting anywhere very fast. If you get stuck in the wrong gear, and you need to accelerate, you need to get into a lower gear to get into some power.
I don't think that you are hearing the gear box making noise. You can hear and feel lugging the engine.
