You don't need to fill the oil filter. The reason some do this is so that the engine won't be running without lubrication in those 2 seconds it takes the oil pump to fill the filter and get the oil circulating again. The reason you don't need to do this is that there is always some oil left, and that will suffice until new oil reaches there. Especially as the engine has just been run.
If you have an engine pre-heater then 10w40 will do nicely even in winter. If not then 5w30 or 0w30, 0w40 will be better. In summer I'd run mobil 1 15w50. Best there is imho.
