I know I'm setting myself up for a good flaming here but if you're going to compare a Z3 3.0 and a Saab 9-3 you have to take a broader view. They are two entirely different automobiles with completely different missions in life.
I bought an '00 M Roadster a at the beginning of 2000, and added a 9-3 SE about two months ago. I both cars put wide grins on my face but for entirely different reasons. In fact, I'm glad I got the Saab rather than a 3-series because they so different.
The M Roadster is all about alfresco driving and right-now torque in a very businesslike manner. The responsiveness to throttle inputs is brutally quick. The chassis provides a stiff but supple ride (I know, that's an oxymoron). The car goes exactly where you point it and gets you there an instant after you've thought about going there.
The 9-3 has more personality. It's like a willing puppy that wants to play. When you ask it to do someting, it talks back to you in its own way. Once the boost builds it's almost as quick as the roadster (25hp difference), but the way it delivers the power is completely different. Whatever you ask of it, it's happy to respond.
Like I said, they are both great cars but they are completely different. The BMW says, "what are your orders?". The Saab simply says, "let's go play."
