I have had a 9-5 loaner, a 9-3 convertible, and a Pontiac Grand Am. The Saabs were from the same dealer in Georgia, and the Grand Am was from a dealer in Virginia. When I got the Grand Am, the lady right before me got a 9-5, so I think they had just run out of loaners. The Virginia dealership has a rental agency in-house that the delaership reimburses for the car. I did have to pay $14 insurance for the Grand Am though, which was a surprise to me and was not posed as being optional. They will usually give you a ride to the Metro station, but I needed to run some errands that day.
My recommendation is to call your service department before your next service and ask if they ever give 9-5s as loaners. Just be up front and tell them that you have heard about others getting them, and that would be your preference if it is at all possible. You may want to pose it as a good way to get a day-long test drive before your next purchase! They can either say Yes, No, We'll try, or This dealership doesn't do that...
