Proper shifting in 9-3

I'm wondering how other people learned proper shifting in a 9-3. After spending the last 300 miles or so just getting used to the car, I'm now trying to become better at shifting. This morning (when traffic wasn't too bad), I took my eyes off the road to watch the tach while shifting. Sometimes I "nail" the shift (the revs rise to meet the speed of the car and there's no swinging of the tach needle during and after engagement of the clutch), but most times I either have too high or too low rpms.
Do you just become better at this? I've heard of "heel-toe" shifting, but I cannot imagine fitting my leg and foot correctly to be able to touch both the brake and the gas at the same time. Is the heel on the brake and the toe on the gas, or vice versa? Does anyone heel-toe shift, and if so do you have any pointers for the uninitiated?
Finally, the gears seem a little hard to get into (I have a Viggen, by the way). Sometimes I have to shift very slowly. It's like the timing gears are having a hard time. Does this get better as the car gets broken in?
Thanks!
