I'll give you a stab at it:
It's bigger and safer. By the leading Euro-safety car test, it's the safest car on the road - or safest they had ever tested to date. Don't ask me about the date.
By accounts on this board, I take it you give up a little smaller, nimbler car fun as the big car is generally not as responsive and does not translate driving sensations as well. If I have a personal choice between a small car to drive fast on other than clear, open road turnpike conditions, gimme a smaller one. But if I do a lot of long hauls on turnpikes, gimme the bigger car.
Not better - just better at select applications.
You can more than just get by with a 9-3 on a long haul, but you will not be doing it in comparable comfort nor will the 9-3 car handle as well at super high speed. Weight holds you to the road. A 9-3 will give you the impression of speed better than will a 9-5. This can be a good thing or it can be a bad thing. I consider it a neutral thing.
