I met a guy in the parking lot at the university where I work that was driving a 1985 Saab 900. He was nice enough to talk for a minute or two about his car. He has around 100,000 miles on his 900 and is happy with it. He went further to say that he has driven Saabs since 1972 and usually gets between 200,000 and 250,000 miles out of them.
I was thinking tonight about the past couple of years and somehow I got to thinking about my car and thought about the guy in the parking lot. I drive a 1999 9-3 base model. Its a cayenne red 5 speed with cloth heated seats and a sunroof. It has also been an amazing car so far. 2 1/2 years and 44700 miles later I don't regret anything about the purchase. My old 25 mile commute was as much of a joy as my new 1.1 mile trip to work. The car has taken me across the country once and on 150-250 mile trips without a hiccup. All I had to do in return was change the oil (Mobil 1) every 5000 miles and wax it twice a year. It is true that I had to take it to the dealer a couple of time for service that was not scheduled, but nothing too major. The car still looks great and still runs very well.
I think that if I had to sit down and write out on a piece of paper what a car should be able to do, it would be what my car does. It has plenty of power to pass and weave through traffic. It gets 30 MPH on the highway at normal speeds. It is well built to take an accident. It can haul tons of stuff. It has a look that is appealing and at the same time unique. The only thing I ever had to improve on was the stereo system.
I see a lot of people complaining about their Saabs if something goes wrong. I just hope that I am not alone in actually enjoying the hell out of the best car that I have ever owned. I am not sure of where I will be in a few years, but I am sure that if I don't still drive my 9-3 it will only be because the new ones looked a little too appealing. If you ever make it down south, I'll be waiving, from a Saab.
