I upgraded to 17" 9-5 Aero 3-spoke wheels with Bridgestone Potenza RE730s, 215/45ZR17. I was worried about bending because of all the stories I've heard here, especially when it comes to Saab stock wheels. However, I have had no problems with bending in the couple months (and over 3500 miles) that I've had the set.
I have hit two potholes that I was sure would cause bending. Despite quite disturbing sound/impact, enough to rattle the entire car at once and skip the CD player into ERROR mode, there was no visible damage to any of the wheels. I recently had the wheels rebalanced (threw a few weights, don't know how) and the wheels were still quite true. I have been pretty obsessive about keeping tire pressures correct, however I think the biggest factor in rim protection was the extremely stiff sidewalls of these particular tires.
I can't wholeheartedly recommend 17s to just anyone as the ride harshness is quite pronounced. Sometimes it gets to me, but most of the time it's no problem. I am happy to lose some ride quality for this much handling improvement. 16s would be a safer choice overall if you want to keep the ride a bit softer. I would, however, highly recommend the RE730s for whatever size you choose.
