I'm in the same position... Hoping to sign the deal either tomorrow or Saturday. I test drove the Audi A4 (kinda plain), Volvo S40 SE (only available in an automatic), VW Passat (too family-like), the Saab 9-3 (ok)and the 9-3 SE (even better!). I have always been biased toward Saab even though they can be "quirky" sometimes and that is what I am going to go with. Each one of the other cars had their pros and cons but I kept coming back to the classic Saab design, cockpit, etc.
I will be going with the 9-3 SE - 5 door - manual tranny - silver - with premium package.
Why? It has a stiffer suspension, larger wheels, much better stereo and in general, is much more fun to drive than the base. If you're looking for comfort or a smoother ride, I would get the base. The suspension in the SE is stiff and you do feel more of the road but to me, the "fun factor" and the upgraded stereo definitely outweigh the cost of having a little bit rougher ride (I have an SUV now so it's still a step up for me.). Besides that, the extra ground effects and foglights just look cool. :-) You also get 3yr/36K no charge scheduled maintenance with the SE and you do not with the base... in addition to the 4/50 warranty.
As far as price goes, the car I'm looking at stickers for $34,300 and I am down to $31,500 plus $2,000 lease incentive before negotiating too hard. That seems like a reasonable deal to me given the timeframe and the new models coming out. Comments?
