Yes, you cannot run crappy fuel with impunity. You could have added some octane booster. Also, Techron Concentate will boost octane as well, and will reduce knocking tendancies created by poor injector spray patterns and combuston chamber deposits which create hot spots and ignition points. So you did have a couple of options.
I can get 92 octane in Kansas, and frequently fill up with 91 octane which is more typical of what is available. When I run on a tank of that fuel to Indianapolis I do not have any difficulties with 91 octane at that altitude. The engine is a relatively low compression ratio, so octane is not as critical as you might think. The engine's comustion chamber and pistons are well designed. The combusion chamber design and squish volume have a great influence on knock resistance. I think that the Trionic is overly conservative about knock avoidance. The system works, but the park plug sensing may be overly sensitive. The ECU also gets freaked out about higher inlet temperatues, and detunes. Running with an BMC for a while shows what the engine can do, and also shows up some features of the trionic operation that are is suspect value.
