I can't believe in this day and age that people don't know the "feeling" of ABS brakes until it comes time to really use them. When you say the brakes "kind of grinded", this is absolutely 100% NORMAL when the ABS engages. Basically, you've probably never tested them under conditions that called for the ABS to kick in... Thus I say...

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!

Take your car out on a wet or better yet, snowy day and brake, brake, brake... Find a big empty parking lot where you can't hit anything and go nuts. You'll learn a lot about the stopping limits of ABS and it might save your life someday.

For extra credit try taking out the ABS fuse to disable the system and practice the same stop at the same speed with and without ABS. Throw in some turns at the same time and be amazed at how ABS allows you to actually turn while braking, while without them you'll just lock em up and go straight.
