Very good points! I recently made an offer to a dealer on a 9-3 SE HOT Sport, after the previous owner handed the car back at the end of a 3 year lease. (Due to some technicallities, I am hoping that I can finally take possesion of the car this coming week.)
The car has only done 20K miles, and at £10K (=U$14500) it's a bargain!
The previous owner switched the lease to the new Aero Design Edition. The dealer just wanted the car off his hands before he ended up loosing on the depreciation, since he had already made his money on the lease, and had a show room with brand spanking new cars to worry about.
The moral of the story is that a dealer prefers to sell new cars with a new lease, rather than having to dispose of a used car. The margins are far healthier in the first instance. The winner can be the person who then makes a sensible offer whilst there is still some of the lease period left. I was just damn lucky that I happened to be passing the show room to arrange for a service, when I saw my new 9-3 being prepared to go to an auction house! I jokingly made an offer and the dealer accepted!!
