Thanks.
I didn't have time to take the car in for a mech to look at it. There are only three places that would know what to look for and are all busy. I was able to speak to a few master technicians and get advice on what to look for. It helps that I have a lot of experience with cars. I've bought over 30 since my first. I've done body work in a shop when I was in high school. I was also a mechanic on jet engine aircraft for over 10 years. I fix my own BMWs but admit that I'd have taken it in for a look had I the time. Front wheel drive is new to me. I've only owned a 97 VW GTI and the front drive never got my attention.
I've been placed in kind of a jam and must buy a car tomorrow. I don't really have to but the alternative is to drive my 4x4 truck that is set up for monster snow accumulation use. I had planned on riding my motor bike (BMW R11S) down but headquarters stated that I had to bring a passenger from another office that couldn't fly down. This is going to be my wife's car for daily driving. My choices are the Saabs, VW's New Beetle and Subaru's Outback wagon. When we're on vacation I do the driving. So much for the Outback and Beetle. I'm a driving enthusiast!
The new car is basically replacing our 1989 Volvo 240 wagon (5spd) that has over 215k miles on it.
Thanks for all the advice.
