GM and the new 9-3

I'm not sure if this is a re-hash of previous info, but I had a discussion about the 9-3 with my dad over the weekend -- he's an engineer for GM Powertrain in Detroit. I own a '00 base model and was saying how happy I am with the engine, especially how quiet it is. His comment was, "Kiss that goodbye." I asked, "Why?" It seems the word around HQ is the General is not exactly giddy with their return on investment in Saab, and has taken over all aspects of heavy engineering work on the new car and is leaving Saab just to add some Saab "personality". While it will probably still be a turbo, the new engine will have to fit into the product lines of Opel, Vauxhall, Pontiac, Saturn, or whoever else is using the new platform at GM. That's also why there's no hatchback. I said, "Least-common-denominator". He said, "Yup".
Looks like I'll be keeping my '00.
