Those nattering nabobs of negativity on anything SAAB, the Consumers Union of America acknowledge in their 2002 car issue, P 27 Consumer Reports, April 2002 that both the 9-5 and 9-3 are more reliable than the Lexus IS300, the BMW 3 series, the MB C class, andth Volvo V70 and S80, the Jaguar S type , the BMW 5 series, the MB E class, the MB S class and the Audi A 6, the VW Passat, the Volvo S40the Audi TT. Yeah the bottom line is that SAABs are now in the class of Suburu when it comes to reliability.
Considering the fun to drive quotient, the utility and value plus safety, the SAAB surely represents one of the best values in auto show rooms today.
UNfortunately CU still does not understand that smashing a Toyota or Honda into a brick barrier is not a true measure of safety. What makes a car safe is all weather driveability, good solid handling and repsonsive handling. Thus, the SAAB can avoid an accident that most SUVs and poor handling sedans would simply plough into. CU does not understand this because any publication that is more concerned with how many wheel chairs fit in the trunk rather than real life mortality stats (See Folksam) by miles driven by model and make is clueless. For instance CU would have America believe a Ford taurus is as safe as a 9-5 aero???? Get real. THe only time the Taurus is as safe as 905 is when both are dropped off the side of cliff at the same moment. Even then the SAAB's drag coeficient would make its slip stream less turbulent as the drive attempts to eject and deploy his shute. CU is comming around but it still does not recommend the 9-3. Tell me what is a better value, base 9-3 or V 6 accord or camry. For those who are not on Haldol, the answer is clear, Swedish steel rules.
