Tom,
I have a base US-spec 2000 Saab 9-3 with the manual transmission. It has 66,000 miles on it, with much of that being on the autobahn here in Germany. The car was a demonstrator for the dealer where I purchased it with 4,000 miles on it. Problems: replaced the heater control box when the fan switch died at 60,000 miles, replaced the 4th gear synchronizor under warranty. One other quirk is I replaced 3 foglights because of road debris, which I theorize is a problem because they sit on the outside edge of the lower front where they easily collect debris from the wheels of the vehicle directly in front. I've never had foglight problems before, but they were on cars that had the lights toward the center of the front. How does reliability compare with other cars? My friends and neighbors with BMWs complain about electrical problems and quirks constantly. Water pumps seem to be the other consistent problem on BMWs too. My friends with Volvos also complain about electrics. Mercedes Benz has trouble with their new electronic controlled transmissions according to Autoweek. I also own a Honda Civic and an Acura Integra GS-R. They have their quirks too, and I find the Saab to be just as reliable. I really have it nice because I enjoy driving and owning all of my cars, particularly the Saab. It is critical to do the maintenance on all of them. The bottom line is I spend most of my time driving my Saab rather than needing to do repairs.
