While I am sure the new SAAB 9-3 will have a world class chassis and the usual SAAB personality, the turbo engines are undertuned if SAAB intends to compete with anything more than a BMW 325 or an Audi 1.8. Why do we always have to wait until the second year of production to get the "tuned engines". The original 93 was tuned at 185 HP and the original 9-5 was tuned at 170HP. Come one, turbo or not, you still need some ponies to compete with the Acura S class or the BMW 330 or the Infiniti G35 or even the swedish version of an overpowered canal barge on wheels the Volvo T%.
Now I know SAAB will chip these engines after they make it through year one without major warranty issues, but market leadership means comming out with a best offering out of the box. There is no way I would buy a 03 NG 9-3 given that for the same money in the next model year, you are 95% guaranteed to get a 10% to 15% jump in HP and a 7% to 10% jump in torque.
