I do take our 9-3 convertible to a hand car wash shop in Orange County (Steve's Detailing) and they've done a good job on it. I've had lint on the top from drying with a towel (and my favorite cat used the top as a bed when we were on vacation recently - ouch), so I've used a masking tape-type lint roller (like you probably use on your clothes) to remove that type of material. I think the primary key to longevity is cleaning the top pretty regularly (preferably putting it down when it's clean, so abrasion from dirt is minimized) and periodically using a top cleaner and treatment. There have been several references here to different sources/products. One of the first was a heavy duty scotch guard, for treatment. There are specialty products (Porsche dealers sell cleaner and treatment products for soft tops.
I'd lower and raise the top as often as the weather and temperature permit - but hopefully you keep the top clean. After all, you bought the convertible to be able to lower the top. I got to use our convertible this week and the top went down every evening as I left the parking structure. By the way, if you're tempted to operate the top inside a parking structure, make sure there is plenty of clearance above for the top to operate without hitting the ceiling or other obstruction.
As to your leather seats, apply a good leather treatment regularly. Lexol is one brand I've seen recommended.
