...the primary goal was probably to increase the rigidity of the chassis in moving to a non-hatch configuration.
If you look at your car and think about it, every opening in the body creates a weak point where flexing can be introduced. The hatch part of the body is the largest opening creating what is probably the weak point in the vehicle overall. By closing off the hatch (for the most part) the new 9-3 should be remarkably stiffer than the current model.
I guess it's time to pick up a trailer hitch and one of thos funny little trailers to haul stuff around in.
