Why risk giving up that small but fiercely loyal group? Mercedes and Lexus are trying to poach some sale sin that genre, but the types of people who would buy a $25-30K hatch woulnd't be caught dead in a Mercedes (and a plasticky, noisy one at that) or a boring Lexus.
My guess is that Saab had spent enough money doing the Epsilon platform and the new 9-3 design and couldn't afford the incremental cost of engineering a hatch as well. That, PLUS they feel like there are enough hatch loyalists who would consider a 9-3 wagon, which also would appeal to a traditionally non-Saab audience as well. I, as a viggen owner, was seriously considering a 9-5 Aero wagon for a short while -- it was sporty enough for me to ignore its family-hauler image.
Anyway, the demise of the hatch is a sad one indeed; if Saab were better off financially, I wonder if we wouldn't see two 9-3's out this fall -- one hatch for the 20%'ers, one sedan for the other 80%.
