Not sure I understand what you mean about size of the 996? Dimensions are roughly the same as any of the 911s, about 170" long and 70" wide. 996 is around 175", mainly I think just b/c it has a pointy nose. :-) Weight actually a little lower than the 993, though it is lots heavier than the older 911s. The shape makes it look fatter I guess, especially on the turbo, since the wide wheel arches are more smoothly integrated these days.
I don't like how they've electronically insulated everything... who wants a 911 that doesn't oversteer? Ah well, I guess the guys only interested in color don't mind. I have no appreciation or respect for the Boxster. I was hoping it would die a swift and merciless death, but no such luck.
I haven't sat in a newer 911, but I've heard they've become progressively more cushy, luxury type cars with the emphasis off a true sports car. Cater to your customer I guess.
Price, you're right in that certainly the engine that made Saab famous (the now departing one) was an outsourced one, or at least one that Saab shared development with Triumph on. So I guess you could say their strength is in taking a good foundation and improving upon it. Hope they're even more successful this time than the last!
Tony, what's this about a 944 spinoff? I had heard rumors of a new 2+2 GT powered by the Cayenne V-8TT, which I would consider a very exciting rejuvination of the 928 heritage. Had you heard rumors of another 4 banger coming down the line from half of the V-8? That would be cool. The 968 is one of my favorite cars of all time.
