Need to Stick to Saab's Maintenance Schedule?

My 01 9-3SE recently turned 40k and the "Time for Service" message appeared on the display. During it's first 36k miles (while the maintenance was free), I was pretty dutiful about having the dealer do everything listed in the owner's manual. Now that it's on my dime, I am questioning the need to rigidly adhere to this schedule.
Thoughts? Is there anything people routinely skip or do you all just follow the book?
Thanks in advance.
