Stress is relative? The 1.8T's from VW have lots of problems. Saab engines will go the distance with proper lubrication practices.
If you want to compare engines, you probably want to compare a Saab I4 turbo engine to a high performance NA I4 engine. Now the NA engine must be taken into high RPMs to make its power or even just get off its butt. The inertial recipricating loads on the pistons, rods and valves is probably taking things to a greater stress point than a well designed turbo engine. The NA engine needs to be taken to an ignition advance point which leads to very high stesses at TDC where the wrist pin rotation that supports the oil film tends to go to zero. So thats a high wear point.
A NA engine taken into high RPM power bands is also quite making a lot of noise and vibration. Variable valve timing might be a mechanically vulerable spot in a HP NA engine.
Turbo engines run at lower RPMs and when on boost the ignition timing is very much less agressive. So peak TDC loads are often less than an NA engine.
