Its a common message...When I was 17/18 I really wanted a Saab 99 or an 82 Audi GT Coupe - (I was driving an 83 Buick Skyhawk at the time with 120K miles on it) and my Dad told me no - those cars are unreliable and cost too much to own - Yeah like I wasn't pouring money into the skyhawk....
He also kept harping on the Sob (Saab) stories surrounding Saabs even though everyone we knew that owned one loved the cars. I still like giving my Dad grief over that one - especially since I own a Saab and he has a Volvo now!
So I stuck with GM cars and VWs (My dad had an exception for VWs because they were cheap). I have owned several Jettas - well into the 200K category and never dropped a dime on those cars other than the normal stuff. Every American car I owned was a nightmare with the exception of a Chevy truck that I recently bought. I also owned a BMW with success and FINALLY in early 2000 I bought my first Saab - A 9-3 Viggen. I liked the Saab so much I am on #2 a 2002 Saab 9-5 aero. I haven't racked up the miles some folks at Saabnet have in their years of ownership, but I can say I have yet to be in the shop for any mechanical issue.
Overall cost of ownership for a foriegn car will be more expensive. Insurance is genrally higher and after the warranty is up the parts can be more expensive etc. That said you can always find cheap parts via the internet (just look at the sponsors on this site) and a decent independent shop and the cost will balance out with the amount of long term issues you would probably have with an american car.
Overall you make a trade off - one that I feel is for the better -- Did you see the crash rating on the new 9-3 SS? The life of myself and my family is the most valuable thing to me and if it costs a little extra to protect it I will -- Saabs are a solid bet in that category.
I have yet to drive the 9-3SS, but it looks sharp. If it makes financial sense go for it. You have to start somewhere....
