I had the same experience. Went from a 95 mustang convertible (v6/base) to 99 9-3 convertible bought new. Insurance cost dropped despite the much higher valuation of a new Saab over a 5 year old Ford. Why? Theft rate on Saab is very low (you can't give them away I guess) and accident rate is probably low because of ownership base (somewhat older with more enthusist drvier who actually know how to drive).
I have had my car for 3 years. At the end of this third year, Saab did cover some wear and tear type items on the interior. Service cost will not be an issue right away, but should not break the bank if you live in an area with lots of service options.
The more upright driving position is a plus as is overall comfort, seat quality, etc.
