you can definitely do this yourself.
You need a set standard torx bits and a screw driver to get the inner door skin off.
There are at least four bolts to remove to get the skin off (its been a while since I did this). There are at least two at the base of the door. There's one hiding inside the pull handle (just pry half of the handle off with a small screw driver). And there's one as part of the door release piece as well. Once you've removed all of the bolts, the skin slides up (with some force). However, have a good look around for any more bolts as there may be a few that I can't recall at the moment.
I suspect you'll find that the thin metal bar that the inner door release connects to has become detached from the release itself. If this is the case, simply reattach it and put everything back together.
Don't be afraid to take things apart on this door. There's not too much that you can break (just watch how you handle some of the plastic bits). Keep in mind if you plan on working on any of the other doors, that the front two doors contain sensors for the side impact air bags. Best not to work on these.
