I run around 32 psi on my Artic Alpins. Haven't tried to plow through 6" of snow yet though. Lower pressures will increase the contact patch of the tire. You can also always run down into the 20psi range for really nasty snow or ice, but avoid highway speeds because the sidewall will heat up and possibly ruin the tires... BTW: TCS is better than a spinning tire in the snow because it is tougher to regain traction than to maintain it.
As for why the BMW did better: My guess is momentum (going faster to start with)... Momentum means a lot in uphill slick conditions. I suprised a lot of drivers in the snow driving around in a 300zxTT for several winters...
