Good post ... people need to know that leasing can sometimes be a better deal. It certainly was in my case.
Things to think about (when you plan on keeping the car long-term):
- The residual value is essentially a "no payments no interest no accrual loan".
- Make sure that the capitalized cost on the lease equals what you would be able to pay the dealer for a cash transaction (this is the hard part since the dealer will try to manipulate this amount upward while trying to have you focus only on the monthly payment and/or down payment)
- The option to buy the vehicle or walk away is essentially "an insurance policy on both the value of the car and the suitability of the car". What if you get a lemon? What if the vehicle is badly damaged in a wreck and the vehicle is not totalled? Can a vehicle ever be restored to original condition once it is involved in a serious accident? Maybe ... but try telling that to someone buying your "purchased" car. What if you just don't want the car anymore for whatever reason (after fulfilling the lease ... of course)? A pre-determined buyer at a pre-determined price could prove to be very advantageous.
- SAAB leases have allowed both incentives and essentially 0% financing of a portion of the car (remember the rest/residual is a "no payments no interest no accrual loan")
- Delayed tax payments
- And more ...
Of course, there are cons to leasing, but most of the cons are fairly well known. Plus, this message is much longer than I intended ...
