There seem to be 2 schools of thought on changes:

1) The Manufacturers know what they are doing, and every 8-12K miles is fine.

2) The manufacturers are recommending longer intervals because they are paying for scheduled maintenance now, want to keep their costs down, and they really don't care if there is long term harm, because the car goes out of warranty in 4 years.

I think most will agree every 3,000 is overkill, especially with synthetic oils. Personally, I drive all my miles in heavy stop and go, and my dealer charges $22.95 for an oil change with Saab oil & filter, so changes every 5,000 miles will provide cheap peace of mind.
