Yes it's confirmed. For the 2005 model year, the 9-3SS will get the 4cyl 16v Multijet JTD 150hp / 320NM Torque diesel engine. This engine is a class leading engine, co developed under the GM-FIAT powertrain joint venture. The engine is currently being fitted to the Alfa 156 Coupe and the Vectra.

As to the previous crap regarding 1995 Tdi engines... Diesel technology is where it's at in Europe. You can't begin to appreciate the advances that have been driving this engine arms race in europe until you drive the latest European diesels.

These engines are stuffed with very advanced electronics, balancer shafts, 4 valve heads, variable vane turbos, cross-flow intercoolers, cleaner-burning fuel, new particulate traps, pre-heaters, 2nd generation common rail fuel delivery systems with highly accurate injectors to control burn time etc...

They rev quickly, the dump their torque (which in this case for the 1.9litre 4cyl engine) is 320nm from 1500 rpm... and that torque curve STAYS flat most of the way through the rev range.. giving a car with in-gear acceleration times that most petrol engines could only dream of... all at much lower fuel consumption... comparing a VW 1995 TDi engine from about 4 generations ago with a modern unit is like comparing a Euro jet fighter with the Wright Brothers' first creation... the game has moved on THAT much. If you can't make a decent diesel engine in Europe.. you are missing 60% of the sales market...

p.s. the 9-5 may be getting the 2.4 5cyl multijet engine.. which is 380NM of torque...

Oh!.. and all of this is of course before tuning... which adds another 30% on top for about 500 dollars US,
