Does the check engine light come on when the car starts to run rough, meaning BEFORE it actually stalls or won't start?
Also, the battery symbol should come on while you are driving if the alternator stops charging the battery for any reason.
140k miles is a lot on a 90A Bosch alternator (if that is what you have). It is one of the few parts that wears gradually with mileage, even if all hwy. Actually, it is the brushes that wear out, and the voltage regulator fails with age and temperature (around $75 on eEuroparts, I think).
I do not know how to diagnose that on a Saab, short of connecting a volt meter and measuring the voltage while driving and when the car starts to run poorly.
Measuring the voltage before you park the car for the night, in the morning before starting, and with engine running could give your mechanic an idea what to look for.
