engine whine - ideas? Posted by JimBlake [Email] (#141) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JimBlake) on Wed, 16 Jun 2004 07:19:34 In Reply to: engine whine during upshift?, greg, Tue, 15 Jun 2004 14:04:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Maybe it's the turbo? Here's my thoughts:
If it were the accessory drive belt or a pulley, then you should hear it in neutral. After all, the accessory drive simply spins with the engine.
When you actually accelerate, the engine is under load. But when you rev the engine (disengaged clutch or in neutral), there's little or no load. So you don't hardly need any throttle to get to 3000rpm, therefore the turbo doesn't spin up as fast.
If you want to abuse your clutch (in the noble persuit of figuring this out), try this. In 5th gear, hold the brakes while you begin engaging the clutch (heel&toe). Maybe you can load the engine enough to make the noise? Then someone can listen under the hood & pinpoint the location of the noise. Don't do this any more than you have to & leave time for the clutch to cool in between tries. It's NOT real good for your clutch.
