96 SAAB Turbo- engine died Posted by Gerry [Email] (#1840) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gerry) on Thu, 25 Aug 2005 06:35:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have a 96 Saab Turbo convertible, 91K miles. Driving it up a hill, and it stalled/died totally. Got the triangle symbol with the asterisk. Let it cool down, and then it started, but was making a low pinging sound, so had it towed to Saab dealer.
They said oil pressure OK, but timing chain jumped (??), and said that it needed a lower part of the engine replaced- $7,000!! I asked what alternative was, and said I could get a whole used engine for $2K, and then spend another $2,100 to get it fixed.
I feel like I am between a rock and a hard place- any other ideas on what the real problem could have been, or any other alternatives?
