Thanks for the info. I don't think the tank will leak unless topped off but I haven't checked a "regular" fill since.
It's possible that the hold-down nut for the fuel pump is loose or cracked:
Last week while on the freeway, I heard a clunk from the fuel tank. I was positive I ran over nothing. Heard a couple similar clunks over the next few miles and was really positive. I then noticed that the fuel gauge had suddenly dropped from 1/2 to empty! (Hence my top-off experiment.) When I exited freeway, at each of the next several stops, the car barely responded to the gas pedal from a dead stop. After 5 secs or so, it would kick in and then drive almost as normal with no lag in pedal response at speed. Next stoplight, same lag. I was also able to replicate the fuel tank clunk once or twice more from a dead stop.
I've only driven the car to/from work a couple days and it has behaved almost as normal since. I am loathe to drop $$$ on a new pump until I really know that it's going out. Any ideas?
Thanks, Derek / 1994 900 S V6 1994 162,000mi
PS Obviously the level sensor is messed up right now. I put a 330ohm 1/2watt resistor on the gauge wires and the dash gauge went over 3/4 full. The tank, which is only about 2 gals below full, gives 200ohms. But I don't mind about this if the pump is OK.
