D,
I had a new fuel pump installed a few months back, look for the post. According to the indy, the pump comes only as a full assembly, can't pick and choose parts. I had a fuel smell in the car after install, turns out it was a faulty gasket so they had to R&R again. Indy accessed the pump from the back seat on advice from a long-time saab tech at a dealer in the 'burbs, I think he had to make or enlarge the access hole, but saves you from having to drop the tank. I'll try to take a picture of it tonight.
After new install, fuel gage only went to 3/4 full but still works below that, I'm told (but don't necessarily believe) that's because its a newer pump assembly.
When you refilled, did it show full again or stay at empty? I assume if it was leaking from the bottom like a hole, you would see gas dripping.
Good luck.
Mike
