ok - i guess i'm going to have to be the underdog here, but i have owned both a 99 9-3 coupe as well as a 98SE convert and a 97 SE coupe. I bought the 9-3 new, so everything was covered under warranty, which was cool. However - if cost is a factor, the 900SE is a great value (all mechanicals being equal)as they have obviously depreciated a bit more, and the car has essentially the same basic architecture. Personally, I think the OG9-3 looks really generic or sloppy with the fatter bumpers especially around the wheel wells. The 900SE has leaner, more european styling at the rear end with the wrap around tail lights.
I usually prefer a 5 speed trans (which my 9-3 had) but my 900s are auto, and having driven both, the auto seems to be a better match given the 2.0T factory engine dynamics. The auto seems to compensate for the turbo lag while the 5 speed emphasizes it.
Miss the dash cupholder, steering wheel controls, and the int. wiper adjust on the 9-3, but LOVE the quartz analog clock on the 900.
