So I was all ready to get started and at least pull apart the driver's front end to do the CV joint, got a new breaker bar and a 250lb torque wrench to put it all back together. I popped the hub covering the lug nuts and..... I didn't have a 32 mm socket to undo the wheel hub bolt. Stopped dead in my tracks less than a minute into the project. I thought it was funny anyway.
I pulled the wheel off to inspect anyway, and lo and behold, there was a hole in the boot. I'm going to replace that and just inspect the cv joint and repack if it looks good. Anders, great advice on switching cv's from side to side. Probably though if its bad I'll just spend the $130 for a new one, by the time I undo the other side (or pay a mechanic) it still comes out cheaper . . .
Also pulled apart most of the passenger side control/stanchion arms to do the ball joint. It too is clearly leaking grease. Pulling the assembly apart is simply a function of PB blaster, waiting, and muscle, the bolts are torqued pretty high (80-90 ft.lbs). One of the connections between the two "arms" is not what is shown in the manual, I have a torx on the car but the manual shows a bolt. I know there is a revised suspension that I must have and the websites show two different part no's. Anyone know the torque for that one? Wish I had a press for the bushings, any other way to push them in so I don't have to order the whole arm?
Anyhoo, thanks for the great advice below, interesting what Erich said about cheap boots v. rubber boots, I'll probably get the rubber just to play it safe.
Project's not too bad so far, just takes patience getting everything apart.
Thanks.
