Yesterday I got in the car to go home from work and started it as usual. But the car wouldn't settle down into a smooth idle. It sounded as though it was only hitting on 2 cylinders or something - kind of a bang-bang-miss-miss-bang-bang sort of thing. The tach showed 500 rpm or so, which is obviously lower than normal for idle. I blipped the throttle a couple of times, and it sounded and felt normal up towards 2K rpm, but went back to the missing behavior when I let off. I didn't let this go on for more than 10 or 15 seconds and shut the car off. When I restarted immediately thereafter, it ran normally.
On a possibly related note, I've noticed some brown smoke from the exhaust when I get deep into the throttle after driving around quietly for a while. It doesn't have to be high RPM, just more boost.
Any thoughts? Car has 89K miles, all Mobil 1, all service at the dealer.
