Is the smoke black, white, or blue? The problem could be a simple fix, or perhaps a major fix.
Possibilities:
- Valve stem seals (common to see a tad of smoke upon startup)
- A leaky head gasket (can allow either oil or coolant to enter the chambers)
- Piston rings (can have oil coming up into the chambers, also loses compression on startup)
- If the smoke is black, there can be too much fuel being put into the chambers, can be a sensor telling the engine too much air coming in, lets compensate with fuel, or it can be dirty plugs not causing the firing everytime; when you pull the plugs, take a look at the tips, black, white, corrosion, etc, compare from cyl to cyl, if they all look the same chances are that the rings are fine, and possibly the head gasket fine too, if you getting too much fuel, it usally happens to all cyl at once)
- Lastly, can be a turbo oil gasket somewhere, causing a drip into the pipes... if thats the case, its usually into the exhaust, where it wouldnt effect your idle, but if its on the intake side of things, then you can pull the intake pipe off the throttle body and see oil markings.
- I had the Ignition Cassette fry on mine... it had the same idle trouble, but no smoke... if you put your nose to the cassette (right above the plugs) you can smell the ceramic coating burning away. Terrible oder. Its possible that its on the way out... They just recalled the cassette for the 01' 93 se, not sure about other models.
If I were u I would start with checking into the DI cassette and seeing if a free one is awaiting you at the dealer, if so, get it done, and replace the plugs. Ask for the old plugs back, so you can inspect. See if that solves problems.
If not, take a drive with a buddy behind u, inspect the color of the smoke.
- white - coolant
- blue - oil
- black - fuel
Good luck!
